Coimbatore is an important and renowned manufacturing center located in Tamil Nadu. Its diverse manufacturing base makes it a hub for industrial activity and a prominent export centre in India. The city is home for numerous manufacturing plants producing auto components, textiles motor pumps, etc. Apart from being a major exporter of its products, Coimbatore also exports jewelry, poultry, and software.
Coimbatore is also the highest revenue-yielding district after Chennai (the state capital). Coimbatore also enjoys the nickname ‘Manchester of South India’ as it is surrounded by cotton fields that feed into a flourishing textile industry. Yet, the city has a diversified economy, catering to the IT industry through a skilled labor pool and special economic zones (SEZs) that have attracted leading IT companies and technology service providers..
Auto component makers in Coimbatore include Robert Bosch GmbH, PRICOL Ltd., Craftsman Automation and Roots Industries. Skilled talent from the technical institutes and engineering colleges in the city supply the engineers and technicians required by the industry. Domestic auto makers such as Tata Motors and Maruti Udyog source up to 30 percent of their automotive parts from Coimbatore. Many auto component manufacturing companies in the city are original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners to multinational brands.
The decline of the cotton industry in India’s financial capital Mumbai due to increasing urbanization has benefited Coimbatore. Today it has more than 17 percent of India’s textile mills. It also has several textile research institutes, namely, the Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR) – Southern Regional station, South Indian Textiles Research Association (SITRA), and the Sardar Vallabhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management.
At least half of India’s motors and pumps come from this region, thus lending it the name the “Pump City.” Major pump manufacturers like Aquasub engineering, Mahendra Pumps, Suguna pumps, Sharp Industries, Deccan Pumps, CRI Pumps, Texmo Industries, PVG Industries, Flowserve, and Kirloskar Brothers & KSB Pumps have their manufacturing base here. These companies hold a majority share in the Indian pump market and meet more than 40 percent of the country’s requirements.
Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, though, geographically located in India’s South, straddles the country’s western and eastern seaboards, giving it a unique position.
With global and local investors announcing investments of thousands of crores to set up manufacturing and production facilities in these four states, the coastline will have to brace up to cater to the requirements for shipping and port related activities to support these initiatives.
While Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have been proactive in framing port policies to attract potential investors, Kerala and Karnataka are also slowing realizing the importance of a vibrant maritime sector to the economy of the states.
With the NDA government’s flagship Sagarmala program on port-led development envisaging the creation of coastal economic zones to boost industrialization and GDP, the four southern states are expected to play an important role in this plan.
Are the four states prepared to meet the infrastructure challenges – both on water and on land – that would be crucial to the success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Port-led development which he successfully implemented as chief minister of Gujarat?
Apart from the export-import potential of the port-led development program, Sagarmala also seeks to integrate India’s untapped coastal shipping and inland waterways network, offering immense opportunities to the four states that are blessed with these cost-efficient and environment friendly modes of transport.
Kerala, mainly a consumption driven state, particularly has a lot to benefit from this exercise.
The international container transhipment terminal at Vallarpadam run by D P World is now looking up after a slow start, putting behind many operational glitches. Another container transhipment terminal is coming up at Vizhinjam near the state capital Thiruvananthapuram under the aegis of the Adani Group.
These two large projects are expected to change the face of shipping in Southern India, driving new opportunities in terms of port focussed logistics and ultimately boosting cargo growth.
Kerala also is home to one of the best managed shipyards in the country – Cochin Shipyard Ltd. The Cochin-based shipbuilder is priming up to enter new and niche areas such as LNG ships and passenger-cum cargo ships to add to its crowning glory – the on-going construction of India’s first locally-built aircraft carrier. This further opens-up a new window of opportunity for the shipping and ports industry as the yard is dependent on overseas suppliers to a great extent on building as well as repairing ships.
To cap the state’s maritime lineage is the countless number of seafarers employed globally.
